Pence should resign

Today, Lt. Gov. Steve Pence made clean his break from his boss, Gov. Ernie Fletcher, by endorsing one of Fletcher's Republican primary opponents.

We could pick Pence's positions and statements apart, but at this point we choose not to.

However, we will properly harpoon him on the issue on his loyalty, which has proven to be nonexistent.

If Mr. Pence has any shred of decency or honor left, he will tender his resignation as lieutenant governor immediately.

If a non-merit employee such as a Cabinet Secretary had made this endorsement, he or she would be asked to resign on the spot or else they would be fired.

Who is Steve Pence? Traitor, deserter, defector, or as perfectly coined within camp Fletcher… the Brutus of Kentucky politics. Frankfort politicians incorrectly chose Pence in 2003 and today, Pence chose incorrectly.

Fletcher should not be re-elected. However, Anne Northup should not be elected. She has no agenda and one three-word talking point. “Fletcher can’t win.”

Additionally, anyone noting Northup’s false courage? Raggedy Anne is brave before a camera. However, she will not attend forums. She will not face her opponents.

Obviously, Northup is phony tough and the counterfeit courageous.

What is Chicken, Steel, is to go around posting under different, assumed names. How about posting under your own name or at least the SAME name every time. Do you really think you can pump up everybody's perception of Harper's support by doing that? Do you think people don't realize who you are? You're the only guy on the web out there supporting Harper.

First of all, I do not post under different names, I have noticed people cripting my stuff. Second of all, I have not determined if I am voting for Harper, Fletcher, Northup or at all. I am simply sick of politics as usual.

We don't know quite how to take it when Julian Carroll agrees with us.

Although we think those who are claiming that Carroll is defending Fletcher are smoking some of Gatewood's stash.

It is possible to criticize Pence for disloyalty to Fletcher without it automatically being a defense of Fletcher.

(Although here we proudly both defend Fletcher and criticize Pence both separately and in tandem. And we'd be critical of ANY lieutenant governor of ANY party for such a display of disloyalty.)

Please tell why Pence should resign.

Is it because he has refused to perform his duties as LG? I seem to recall when he resigned the ticket last year that he offered to help the Governor implement policy. If the Governor refuses to use him in that capacity, that is one of the Governor's numerous problems, not Pence's.

Is it because he is not cheerleading for the Governor? Sorry, but that is not the Constitutional purpose for the LG's office.

Is it because he refuses to endorse the indicted Fletcher? Sorry, again nothing in the Constitution about that, either.

In fact, the Constitution does not even mandate the LG's loyalty, which is this case is clearly undeserved.

The LG exists for one purpose, succession. If for any reason the Governor cannot perform his duties, Pence is there to step in. I, for one, take great consolation in knowing that, as long as Pence is there, at least one person who cares about the promises they made in 2003 is still around the Administration today.

No Republican who truly cares about our Party can possibly defend Fletcher any longer.

Mitch McConnell, Anne Northup, David Williams, Steve Pence, Jeff Hoover, and countless others are the future of this Party. Not the Governor or any of his self-serving enablers.

You are right, there is only one reason for the LG, but its about not being a politician, its about doing the right thing. The right thing in this case is Pence's resignation. He is in no way the future of this party.

I have to say that I truly like Steve Pence and his wife. Both are very nice people -- very down-to-earth and sharp. However, I have to agree that he was out of line in endorsing ANY candidate at this point. It was a complete stab in the back to the folks who worked hard to get him elected as part of the Fletcher ticket. I was shocked that he chose to do so.

In the same vein, I was royally miffed that Governor Fletcher asked Pence to resign when he originally declined to be on the ticket again. I thought that was classless and petty of the governor. AGain, it was a stab in the back to the folks who worked hard to get Fletcher elected knowing he would bring with him a sharp Lt. Governor in Pence.

It's clear to me that the Jefferson County "clan" are sticking together. Pence's actions were a clear indicator of that.

I must say that I often wonder what the heck happened with those two. They seemed like a good partnership when I saw them (a number of times) on the campaign trail in 2004. It's like watching a nasty divorce...
